I wondered if anyone can help regarding my situation?
I am english and live in italy. I have a polish car as my partner (who's name the car is in) died last february and so at the moment i am a little stuck because I have an official letter from his son putting it into my ownership but not from the polish authorities. - If I want to register the car in my name, do I have to be in poland or can I do it from italy? I have all the car documents but have this conundrum to resolve before I can move forward

the other scenario is that I want to part-exchange the car and have found a garage(in france)who said they would do the exchange but I am again unsure as to whether i first need to have the car in my name before doing this
in which case I am back to square one

can anyone advise me please....
Kind regards

Hang on...can you confirm something for me?

Is it really true that the basic car registration includes insurance? I haven't passed my test yet (yes, I know, I was too lazy when in the UK) - but have I completely misunderstood what OC and AC stand for?

I was under the impression that OC was 3rd party only and AC was fully comprehensive...but...

Well finally I registered the car today, the proccess was more straightforward than I thought. It only costed me 170zloty in total (including new plates, as the car was from other region) so I think they have lowered the price. Doing it all took me 4 hours (renew my personal 3 months registration as it was due tomorrow, register the car, pay for it, get and replace the plates, go to insurance company to change the name of the insurance). So one morning put to good use.

Also curiously enough, even though I have a 3 months temporal (personal) registation, I got a normal registration for the car. Not temporal, but indefinite. It's useless to me because in 3 months I'll be back to my country with the car and I will register it in my country, but it's nice nonetheless!

All this in Warsaw. Just so you have some updated information :).

Yes, you will need to cancel the insurance because in Poland it continues each year automatically so they will just keep sending you the bill if you don't.

You will also need to inform the Polish authorities that you are permanently exporting the vehicle. I haven't done that myself so don't know the exact procedure I'm afraid.

Thank you very much for the clarification. I will come back to my country by summer so I'll only have to do the 3 months renewal once more, so it's not so bad.

Also, I want to take this car to my country and register it in my country once I'm back. In order to do that, what should I do in Poland before leaving? Should I cancel the car registration here, the insurance, et-cetera before leaving? Or after leaving and registering it in my country? Or nothing at all?

Yes you can, your friend is wrong. It doesn't affect your insurance, all that happens is that in the car document booklet they write a comment on the notes page that you are only registered until your zameldowanie expires. Unfortunately this means that every 3 months you have to go back and show them your new zameldowanie and then they write a new note.
Once you get a karta pobytu you can register for 5 years so then it isn't so bad.

One question: Is this valid too if you have temporary registration? That one that is up to 3 months and you must renew it on and on? I got this kind of registration and I would like to register a car I want to buy, on my name. I don't mind having to renew insurance and (personal) registration every 3 months. I would have to re-register the car after 3 months too? Or I can't even register the car on my name because of my temporal registration? I've been told so by a polish friend, and it really took me down...
